Join us for a free screening of We, the Voyagers: Part 1: Our Vaka on Saturday, April 6 at 5pm followed by Spagetti Dinner . Screening is free and open to all. Click here to register for the $15 spaghetti dinner.

Part 1. We, the Voyagers: Our Vaka

Polynesian people of Taumako, Solomon Islands, share their history, motivations, and skills, through story-telling, canoe building, and wayfinding. They recall how their ancestors made the greatest of human migrations, but modern technology isolates them, and makes their lives unsustainable. They decide to follow the ways of their ancestral culture-hero, Lata, who built a voyaging canoe (vaka) and navigated to distant islands using ancient designs, materials and methods. Recalling what others have now forgotten, women, men, and children plant gardens, feed the workers, make rope from plants, weave and sew sails, fell a tree, adze a hull, and lash it all together. They try to avoid making bad mistakes that Lata made. When their most experienced navigator dies, they face their fears, build a vaka, and prepare to test themselves by making an open ocean voyage to reconnect with long-lost family.  Everyone is welcome to join this crew of Lata

Come sail with us! Through the spring, summer, and fall, the Sailing Committee offers sailing around the harbor led by some of the club's best skippers.

This is a great way to have fun on the water, get integrated with the Club's sailing scene, and get to know your fellow sailors. Activities get underway around 1400, but check in on VHF channel 69 if you arrive later, or have the Watch Officer on duty call out to the skippers.

Whether you're looking for some casual time on the water or some skill-building under the supervision of a more senior captain, come on out with us on the club's Cal 20 keelboats. If you are working toward being qualified to take out and skipper club boats, Sundays are a great way to practice, strengthen your sailing skills and confidence, and increase your sailing experience.

Learn to sail! This is a safe and fun way for youth ages 8-18 to learn how to sail in either an Optimist (Opti) or Laser. Both boats are extremely popular recreational dinghies that also feature prominently in competition.

This class teaches basic sailing as well as developing confidence and seamanship. Although no experience is necessary, campers must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket.

In our fun-filled camps, students will learn:
    • Basic sailing skills, in their own boats
    • Water safety skills
    • How to read the wind
    • Critical thinking skills, as they navigate a boat among a small group of other boats
    • Teamwork, as they work in small groups to rig and sail boats
    • Leadership skills, as they skipper a boat and direct a crew member

Camp is M-F from 8:30am to 3:30pm each day. Campers will need to bring their own lunches.
